12/26/2023 0 Comments Clouds rest summit![]() We descended easily on a series of gradual switchbacks until we were halfway down, deep in the woods, when whoever had built the trail seemed to just dig in his shovel and say, Screw it, let’s get this over with and make the trail go straight down.Īnd down, down we went… on a hill so steep, I thought every step would bust my kneecap or break the ball of my foot. I was so excited at my first Half Dome sighting that I stopped to take several pictures, only to realize I’d have that view for most of the hike. West of Cloud’s Rest, the trail was wide open, lightly traveled, and had views of Half Dome at every turn. The jaunt from Cloud’s Rest to Little Yosemite Valley isn’t particularly difficult and in fact for the first mile or two, we skipped happily down the trail, our backpacks several pounds lighter, eager to hit the campsite early and float in the river all day. ![]() I also used to think I could hike just fine without a pair of hiking poles, which I considered the requisite sign of bad knees and getting old. Saturday: Mostly sunny, with a high near 66.I used to think hiking downhill was much easier than hiking uphill. Tonight: A 20 percent chance of showers and thunderstorms before 11pm. Today: A 20 percent chance of showers and thunderstorms after 11am. Tonight: Partly cloudy, with a low around 48. Today: Partly sunny, with a high near 89. Tonight: Partly cloudy, with a low around 59. Today: Mostly sunny and hot, with a high near 96. Saturday: Mostly sunny, with a high near 79. (I added the elevations and took out the wind speeds.) Note that both Yosemite Valley and Wawona are at 4,000', but the forecast high differs by 8 degrees. ![]() Here is the detailed forecast from the National Park Service for last Friday. I'd go with a range of 3 - 5 degrees cooler per thousand feet.īut, since all of these locations are in the mountains and have various geographic features affecting the climate & weather, this isn't exact. I can't explain why Tuolumne Meadows isn't cooler than Yosemite Valley at this moment it ought to be about 12 or 13 degrees cooler. However, at the moment I am typing this, about 4 am on September 3, is reporting a temperature of 41 F at Yosemite Valley, but for Tuolumne Meadows, which has an approximate elevation of 8,619 feet, the temperature is also reported as 41 F. Again, microclimate factors at either location could vary the temperature. That could potentially mean it's almost 20 degrees F cooler at the summit of Clouds Rest than in Yosemite Valley. ![]() The summit of Clouds Rest is 9.926 feet, so that's a 5,926-foot elevation difference from the floor of Yosemite Valley. It could be more windy at Glacier Point than on the valley floor, making it feel colder. Of course microclimate conditions such as sun, shade, wind and clouds will affect that. So you could expect, typically, Glacier Point to be about 10 degrees F cooler than the floor of Yosemite Valley. I believe that the temperature on average drops 3 degrees F for every 1,000 feet in elevation gain. So that's 3,200 feet change in elevation. Glacier Point is at an elevation of about 7,200 feet. The floor of Yosemite Valley is at an elevation of about 4,000 feet above sea level. ![]()
